Is your website content ready to rank for AI overviews? Or are you missing out on this valuable traffic source?
In an age where AI-driven search results are transforming the digital landscape, gaining visibility in AI overviews has become a powerful asset.
Why ranking in AI overviews is essential today?
AI-driven overviews on platforms like ChatGPT, Bing, Perplexity and Google’s Gemini are changing how users discover and engage with content. Unlike traditional search engines, these AI overviews often present concise, curated answers.
Ranking in these overviews means not only increasing visibility but also enhancing credibility and conversion potential, as these sources provide high-quality, trust-oriented responses.
For our client, a leading university in Malaysia, we took on the challenge of positioning their content for optimal performance across various AI platforms. With a rising number of users leveraging AI platforms for decision-making, from choosing universities to exploring academic programs, being featured in these overviews would be instrumental in capturing high-intent traffic.
Our objective was twofold:
- Boost organic traffic originating from AI platforms through LLMO (Large-Language Model Optimisation)
- Increase conversions directly through these AI-driven interactions.
Results
We started optimising the website for AI traffic in August 2024. Within two months, this is what became evident:
- Organic traffic from AI overviews grew from 0 to 2.4k users.
- Conversions started rolling in, with a standout performance on platforms like ChatGPT, which alone generated 33 conversions. Other platforms like Bing and Google’s Gemini also contributed meaningfully to the overall conversion rate.
Strategies implemented
To achieve our goals, we adopted a series of targeted strategies designed to capture AI attention and meet the content criteria of AI/LLM platforms.
- AI competitor research for enhanced insights: In addition to traditional Google Search competitor analysis, we expanded our research to include LLM-specific insights from platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity. By analysing AI responses to long-tail queries, we identified competitor pages featured in AI outputs, allowing us to refine our content strategy for better AI visibility.
- Optimised content for AI platforms: Focused on delivering concise, authoritative, and structured content that directly answered common user queries. This included creating multiple short and targeted articles on informational angles.
- Utilised LLMO techniques: Leveraged Large Language Model Optimisation (LLMO), implemented entity optimisation, and enhanced semantic relevance in content to improve alignment with AI-driven searches.
- AI-focused keywords and structured data: Integrated AI-focused keywords and utilised structured data (e.g., FAQs, reviews) to make our client’s content machine-readable and relevant for AI-driven insights. Using schema markup, we improved the data quality and accessibility for AI algorithms.
- Experimented with AI-friendly formats: Structured our pages to be skimmable and provided direct answers to common questions. Formats like Q&A and listicles helped our content be recognised as “answerable” by AI models.
- Regular performance tracking and adaptation: Continuously monitored AI-driven traffic and conversions, refining our strategies as we observed how different types of content were performing on each AI platform.
As the influence of AI-driven search grows, optimising for AI overviews is no longer optional—it’s essential for capturing high-intent traffic and achieving significant conversions.
Our client’s success is a compelling reminder that the future of search is here, and those who adapt now will lead the way.
